What is MindlessnessX?

If you've tried mindfulness and found it difficult, MindlessnessX may be for you. Mindfulness requires cognitive skill to be able to focus on one specific thing (breath, the present, etc.). Some people are not equipped for that type of constant brain and thought redirection.

If you've tried mindfulness and found it difficult, MindlessnessX may be for you. Mindfulness requires cognitive skill to be able to focus on one specific thing (breath, the present, etc.). Some people are not equipped for that type of constant brain and thought redirection.

I am one of those people. I've tried time and again to meditate, only to lose interest due to frustration and (perceived) failure. I would beat myself up for not being capable. Observing and reading up on mindfulness and meditation, I thought, "The concepts border on mindlessness. What if we explore mindless activities, but those with an intelligent focus and a goal of completion.

So what is MindlessnessX? It is not scrolling on the internet or social media. It is not watching TV. Nor is it napping, eating or writing. It is a soothing activity that is interruptible, allows for wandering thoughts, no redirection or judgement, and, most importantly, has a goal that gives a sense of accomplishment. It is intended as a substitute for those who find meditation and mindfulness difficult, whether it be because of mental health issues, Type A personality, busy lifestyle, or whatever.

Find your X. X is an activity that calms you but has a goal of completion, satisfaction of a job well done. Mine are crossword puzzles, word games (thank you NYT) and jigsaw puzzles. What is yours? Other suggestions: reading, scrabble, Mahjong, and walking the dog. The only one of those that would settle my brain would be Mahjong, but everyone’s different. Let me know your fave activity. I need ideas for the book!
